Rhode Island was the smallest of the 50 states, for it covered only 1,545 square miles. Rhode island borders Connecticut, Massachusetts, and shares a water border with New York. Rhode Island had lots of dense forests of trees. Climate was cool with short summers. Rocky soil prevented growth in agriculture (16). There was also surrounding bodies of water, including the Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island Sound, and Atlantic Ocean. Additionally, there are over 50 rivers in Rhode Island. These geographic features are very similar to that of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. However, Rhode Island also had mountains. Changes of elevation range from 200 meters below sea level of Narragansett lowlands to 800 feet high hills of mountains (40).
