The ethnic diversity of New Jersey beckoned a multifaceted demographic of religious people. There wasn't a universal religion like the Massachusetts Bay Colony; Quakers, Baptists, Anglicans, Calvinists, and others came together and gave New Jersey its rich background that is still thriving to this day. Quakers were pacifists who believed they could communicate with God through their "inner light". They were against slavery and saw all men as equal. The Quakers were widely persecuted by the Puritans for their non-conformity to authoritative figures and their religion as a whole. (13)
