The religious aspect of Rhode Island held many stark contrasts in relation to the religion in the Massachusetts Bay colony. For one , citizens had the freedom to worship in any way that they chose. This meant that, unlike the MBC, there were a multitude of religions present. Among these were Judaism, Catholicism, and the Society of Friends, Quakers (1). There were even some Puritans who had been driven out of the MBC. Another aspect of religion in Rhode Island was the increased separation between the church and the state. Unlike the Puritan church, whose clergy was the government, the churches in Rhode Island are not tax supported (1). It was also a place for new religions. In fact, the first Baptist church was founded in Providence (1).
